Choosing a suitable boat

by

Choosing the right kayak can be a critical decision for the successful finish of the race. While the paddle section of Baw Baw Extreme race is relatively short, only 14 km, it is still an important part of the course and as a participant, you want to successfully complete the paddle section as comfortably as possible.

While we’re negotiating the additional water release for the race, water levels are still not going to be very high (anticipated 0.4m at Coppers Creek), therefore we strongly advise to use only plastic sit-on-top kayaks with trailing rudders, as you will need to get out in some sections and will be hitting some rocks.

The Thomson River is narrow and relatively fast flowing.  You will paddle through rapids up to grade 2. We do not recommend using sit-in kayaks and the river is definitely not suited to carbon or fiberglass crafts.

We have got a fleet of suitable boats for hire. The boats will be delivered to the starting location and picked up at the finish of the leg. Kayak hire is available as an optional item during the event entry or separate booking is available >>. When booking, please advise the level of boat you would like to hire. Three levels are offered: beginner, intermediate and advanced.

All boats have got pedal steering and are suitable for the race section of the river.

  • Beginner boats are stable boats such as Spirit CTR, Epic V5. Recommended for less experienced paddlers, those who do not paddle regularly or not confident in their river paddling skills.
  • Intermediate boats such as Epic V7, Finn Endorfinn, Spirit Racing Ski. These are relatively fast boats suitable for paddlers who train regularly and have got some river skills but not very fit or experienced or just prefer to use a more stable craft.
  • Advanced boats such as Finn Molokai, Spirit Fury. These boats are suitable for very experienced and regular paddlers with solid river experience.

If you’re a strong flat water paddler, but do not have a lot of river practise, we recommend choosing an intermediate boat, it will make your race more enjoyable. If you are a beginner paddler, booking an intermediate or advanced boat will make your race a nightmare, as you most likely will spend more time in the water than on your boat.

Conditions of hire:

  • The cost for hire is a flat $150 for all boats of all levels.
  • Damage liability - up to $300 based on actual cost of repairs.
  • Write-off liability - up to $600 if repair is not possible.

There will be a time on Friday afternoon to set up your boat and take it for a test paddle.

Do not hesitate to book as the number of crafts available is limited.
